Dear Friends,
Many of us are shocked and disappointed at the outcome of yesterday’s election. I know I am. There will be much sobering discussion of the reasons for Vice-President Harris’s defeat and the change in the Senate majority, perhaps even in the House as well, and no small amount of finger pointing, as is always the case in the wake of such a defeat.
However, I hope we can prevent ourselves from descending from disappointment into despair; that will serve no purpose. Let me suggest some things that may help.
Firstly, take care of yourself by attending to your physical and emotional health. Take walks or go the gym, if you can. Read an absorbing book, listen to inspiring music, do whatever you have always found will lift your spirits in a hard time.
Secondly, reach out to family and friends. In worship, when introducing our time of “Stones of Joy and Concern” I often say that “There is no joy that is not multiplied and no sorrow that is not lightened by sharing them with others of good faith.” I believe this to be so true. Remind yourselves that you are not alone in all of this.
Thirdly, remember that there were some positive results as well last night in down ballot races and reproductive rights referenda (though falling short in the gerrymandered Florida system.) We can build on these.
Fourthly, try to hold on to the courage you already exhibit just getting through your daily life and work, with all of its joys and challenges. Do more if you can, volunteer if you can, find a worthy cause locally in which you may make a difference; there are many.
Lastly, come to church, in person if you can or online. We are always there for you, and we would love you to be there for all of us. Especially in this foreboding time, we need one another more than ever.
As ever in affection,
Rev. Steve
