If you’ve been to Hawai’i or watched a travel show you don’t know Hawai’i the way this movie will reveal it to you! Learn that the true meaning of “Aloha” goes beyond a simple greeting.

Learn about indigenous Hawaiian culture and history through a visit to a cultural school that teaches middle and high school students native songs and dances. How does the teacher instill pride, strength and self-confidence into the reluctant students? If you bring along your teen or pre-teen, how do they feel about doing a dance performance of this type? How do they feel about diversity and inclusion?

The movie tells the story of Hina, who is both an honored and respected kumu, (teacher, cultural practitioner and community leader) and a proud and confident mahu (transgender woman). Learn how the Hawaiian culture views those people who are between the male and female ends of the gender spectrum.

Hina, the lead character, marries a man from Tonga, and they work out their differences as well as the aspects of being in a relationship with a transgender person. Perhaps even examine how your marriage or relationship is similar to and different from theirs! The second character, Ho’onani, is a young girl who dreams of leading the boys-only hula group. Will she be followed?

Learn about unconditional acceptance and respect in a setting and situation that differs from our own lives here. Then think about how you can apply that in your daily lives.

77 minutes, discussion afterwards.

This film is not rated. It contains a few segments of crude language during a couple’s argument, but there are no sexual scenes and no violence.
