“Southern Baptist Sissies”
This is an award-winning film version of the successful Del Shore’s play about four boys growing up and coming out in the Southern Baptist Church. It “explores the conflict between the caustic rhetoric of dogmatic religion and the fragile development of adolescent homosexuality while challenging hypocrisy, exposing damage and offering hope” (from the DVD jacket).
Maryhelen adds, “This is an emotionally moving and thought-provoking movie. The actors play the boys at ages 9, 12, 15 and adulthood. We see how the conflicting messages of ‘Jesus loves you’ and ‘homosexuality is an abomination’ tear at them and affect their entire lives. It is uniquely filmed as a live play with multiple camera angles and close-ups.”
Not rated, but only for mature viewers due to nudity, sexual content and language.
