LIFESPAN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Coming of Age
For many years, Unitarian Universalist congregations have acknowledged a turning point in the growth and self-identity of teenagers with Coming of Age (COA) programs. Generally lasting one year, many congregations’ programs have involved trips, retreats, worship services, community service and mentored learning. By involving youth in activities and reflections that encourage the expansion of thinking, feeling, and action, COA enables youth to grow in maturity, responsibility and spiritual depth. Coming of Age programs involves a deeper acknowledgement, on the part of the youth, parents, mentors and the congregation, that the youth are coming into their own as Unitarian Universalists. Unitarian Universalism is more solidly becoming “their religion” and not just the religion of their parents or guardians.
